Who is eligible to receive services:
The Acute Psychiatric Program serves Iowans who are 18 years of age and over and have a serious mental illness.
The Geropsychiatric Program provides long-term care to adult Iowans with chronic psychiatric and behavioral problems and who meet the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care (IFMC) guidelines for nursing home level of care and whose behaviors are such that community-based facilities cannot manage the resident.

Structure of the organization:
The facility is operated by the Iowa Department of Human Services, under the directorship of Charles M. Palmerand under the leadership of Richard Shults, Administrator, Division of Mental Health and Disability Services. The facility's superintendent is Kris Weitzell.
Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and residential treatment workers provide direct-care services to individuals. Psychiatrists, a medical doctor, a psychologist, and social workers provide direct clinical services.
Inpatient psychiatric services for adults and geropsychiatric patients are provided.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) certifies psychiatric services.Nursing home level services are certified under the Ombudsman Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA).
