A Positive Outcome for 29,361 Iowa Kids

March 15, 2018

DHS data exchange activities identify 29,361 students in Iowa school districts to receive free or reduced-price meals.

An additional 29,361 Iowa kids with Medicaid coverage are able to qualify without additional application to receive free or reduced-price school lunches due to DHS assisting the Iowa Department of Education (IDE) with a grant through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). DHS and IDE have developed a data exchange to share information and identify eligible children.

As a result of these efforts, children, including some whose families had not applied for meals, are now being connected with free or reduced lunches.
