In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Drink 5 or more drinks of alcohol (glasses, bottles, or cans of beer, glasses of wine, liquor, mixed drinks) within a couple of hours, more than once a week?"

  • In 2018, 20% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from drinking 5 or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours, more than once a week. Also, 21% of 6th graders,16% of 8th graders, and 21% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from drinking 5 or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours, more than once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Smoke marijuana more than once a week?"

  • In 2018, 28% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from smoking marijuana more than once a week. Also, 21% of 6th graders, 23% of 8th graders, and 40% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from smoking marijuana more than once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Take methamphetamines (crank) once a week?"

  • In 2018, 14% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from taking methamphetamines (crank) once a week. Also, 19% of 6th graders, 13% of 8th graders, and 11% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from taking methamphetamines (crank) once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Take cocaine once a week?"

  • In 2018, 14% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from taking cocaine once a week. Also, 20% of 6th graders, 13% of 8th graders, and 11% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from taking cocaine once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Take amphetamines other than methamphetamines (like stimulants, uppers, speed) once a week?"

  • In 2018, 15% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from taking amphetamines other than methamphetamines once a week. Also, 20% of 6th graders, 14% of 8th graders, and 12% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from taking amphetamines other than methamphetamines once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Use any other illegal drug once a week?"

  • In 2018, 15% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from using any other illegal drug once a week. Also, 19% of 6th graders, 15% of 8th graders, and 13% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from using any other illegal drug once a week.

In the IYS, students are asked: "How much do you think you risk harming yourself (physically or otherwise) if you: Use over the counter medications different from the directions?"

  • In 2018, 18% of Iowa youth reported no-slight risk from using over the counter medications different from the directions. Also, 21% of 6th graders, 17% of 8th graders, and 16% of 11th graders reported no-slight risk from using over the counter medications different from the directions.
