Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis B can be transmitted from an infected mother to her child at birth. The perinatal hepatitis B prevention program works to prevent transmission of hepatitis B infection from the mother to the baby by conducting parent and healthcare provider education, case management of mothers and babies, administration of hepatitis B vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) and laboratory testing.
